Introduction

There are three Session committees: Education & Spiritual Development, Outreach and Personnel. Annually the Moderator nominates and Session elects Elder members to committees so that each committee shall have three members from each class of elders; except that the Personnel Committee shall have one elder from each class. Elders-elect are given an opportunity to indicate a priority interest in committee. Elders are expected to serve the full length of their term (3 years) on the committee to which they are first elected. Each committee annually nominates and Session elects members of the congregation to serve on committees. Congregation members are elected for a one-year term and may serve consecutive terms.

Education and Spiritual Development Committee

The purpose of the committee is to provide for the Christian Education and Spiritual Development of persons of all ages in the congregation. This is to be accomplished through educational opportunities in various settings (classroom, seminars, retreats, day programs, special speakers and conferences); the corporate worship of God in both traditional and contemporary styles; small groups; age and life situation fellowship groups; the church’s ministry of music; and, materials promoting personal devotional life.

The committee is responsible for: recruiting and recommending to Session for approval all persons staffing its programs, including speakers and program leaders; recommending to Session for approval curricula and other material to be used; the Confirmation Class; carrying out a ministry with children and youth; oversight of the Nursery School; providing an annual Vacation Bible School/Vacation Day Camp; providing an annual family weekend retreat; development of such additional groups, programs and activities as may be required to fulfill its purpose; provide for the preparation and celebration of the sacraments; supervise the work of the Board of Ushers, Wedding Coordinators, and the care of chancel furnishings; develop, recommend to Session and oversee the implementation of policies, regarding weddings, funerals and memorial services; recommend to Session schedules of services of worship and celebration of the sacraments.

Outreach Committee

The purpose of the committee is to provide opportunities for members of the congregation to use their time, talent and treasure in Christian service to others both within and beyond the life of San Marino Community Church; to reach out in evangelism; and, to develop programs which provide for a welcoming and inclusive church membership responsive to the needs and cultural diversity of our community.

It is the responsibility of the committee to: review all requests for mission support and recommend to Session the distribution of all benevolence dollars; maintain contact with supported mission causes; plan, promote and carry out mission work projects for youth and adults, locally, nationally and internationally; direct a program providing opportunities for members to volunteer their time and talent in support of church programs and activities; oversee the annual General Fund pledge campaign; interpret the work of the church to the congregation; outside advertising and promotion of the church; recommend to Session and promote the reception of special offerings; develop such additional programs and activities as may be required to fulfill its purpose; new member recruitment and orientation; conduct an annual review of Active Member Roll.

Personnel Committee

The purpose of the Personnel Committee is to represent Session in all matters pertaining to the employment, evaluation, and support of the church staff.

It is the responsibility of the committee to: recommend changes in the terms of employment, including the terms of call for pastors; recommend to Session the employment and discharge of non-ordained professional staff; in consultation with the pastor, employ and discharge non-professional staff; conduct annual performance evaluations of professional staff (ordained and non-ordained); maintain current Session approved job descriptions for all staff positions; act as Session contact with the Committee on Ministry; maintain a list of member volunteers.

Other Session Responsibilities
It shall be the responsibility of Session to: plan and conduct the annual General Fund pledge campaign and an ongoing program of interpretation; adopt a balanced General Fund Budget upon recommendation of the Board of Trustees; make plans and arrangements for the Annual Meeting of the Congregation/Corporation.
