History of San Marino Community Church
The Founding of San Marino Community Church

San Marino Community Church (Presbyterian) began in 1940 as the result of an effort by several lay men and women to bring a Protestant Church to San Marino. A city ordinance prohibited the establishment of bars, motion picture houses and churches. In 1941 the ban against churches was removed. A survey of the community having been made, two decisions were taken: a Protestant Church should see itself as a "Community" church and there was a preference to affiliate with the Presbyterian Church. The two conclusions explain the name of the church which includes "Community" and a parenthetical reference to "Presbyterian".

On January 26, 1941 the Presbytery of Los Angeles chartered San Marino Community Church with 77 members. In the first six years the congregation met at Southwestern Academy and then in a vacant bank building on Huntington Drive. Construction of the present campus began in 1947 with a multi-purpose educational wing. This was followed by the sanctuary in 1949.
