When was it that we saw you . . . thirsty?

More than 55 years ago, U.S.
Protestant Churches united for reasons far beyond the
practical goal of fundraising. The joining of forces
not only strengthened the important relief and
rehabilitation work of the churches but most importantly,
proved to the world how great is the power generated when
Christians unite in a common cause. Out of this joint
effort came the One Great Hour of Sharing special
offering. Within the Presbyterian Church the three
programs supported by this offering are the Presbyterian
Hunger Program, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and
Self-Development of People.
Since the end of 2004, disaster after disaster has shown us
the destructive power of water. From the sudden
devastation of a tsunami wave to the joined power of wind
and water in last year's hurricanes, water left communities
across the globe in ruins -- and desperately thirsty.
It didn't take long to see how the lack of safe water can
threaten life just as surely as the powerful wall of water
driven by hurricane winds or earthquake. Whether
brought on by sudden disaster or through the chronic
shortage of clean water, Jesus reminds us that our
neighbor's thirst is our concern.
When we share the gift of clean water, we are sharing life
itself. Our gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing make it
possible in any number of ways for people around the world
to have ready access to safe, clean water. In giving
these gifts, we make the love of Jesus Christ real for
thousands of people around the world.
Look for "One Great Hour of
Sharing" envelopes in the pew pockets or use your regular
offering envelope and indicate "One Great Hour of Sharing"
offering. It's remarkable what your gift will do!
Please give lovingly.
